How to Make the Perfect Red Velvet Cake at Home

Ingredients

For the Cake:

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 225g cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2–3 cups (250–375g) powdered sugar (adjust to taste)
  • Few drops of vanilla essence from Ajanta Food Products

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans.
  • In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, and baking soda.
  • In another large bowl, beat sugar and oil until combined. Add eggs, one at a time. Mix in vanilla essence and vinegar.
  • Stir in pinch of red food colour from Ajanta Food Products.
  • Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Divide batter evenly into pans. Smooth the tops.
  • Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool completely before frosting.

Make the Frosting:

  • Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth and fluffy.
  • Add powdered sugar gradually, then mix in few drops of vanilla essence.
  • Chill slightly if needed before frosting.

Assemble the Cake:

  • Place one cake layer on a plate, spread with frosting, and then top with the second layer.
  • Cover the top and sides with remaining frosting.
  • Garnish with red velvet crumbs or chocolate shavings, if desired.
  • Serve and enjoy!
